Abby Lee Miller doesn’t live up to Instagram Black Square
Racism Score: 4.4
We stated in a previous Vanderump Rules article that people will tell on themselves. This trend continued when Abby Lee Miller insisted on following the “Blackout Tuesday” Instagram trend.
The performative gesture can be misconstrued as empty support for those who claim they have graduated from being a non-racist, to an anti-racist. On a positive note, performative actions give people who have been wronged an opportunity to call out fake support.
We give you exhibit A. As in ‘A’ for Abby Lee Miller of the Lifetime show Dance Moms. In true trite fashion, Miller added the Black Square to her Instagram page to show her solidarity with Black people. Miller failed to realize that people keep mental receipts.
Adriana Smith, a Black mom who pulled her daughter out of the show due to Miller’s racist comments decided to drop a truth bomb regarding Miller’s actions. Smith created an Instagram post that outlines Miller’s racism.
Lifetime did what they had to do and canceled Miller’s show. Miller did not deny she made the comments and provided the following standard apology from the “I got caught making a racist comment 101 handbook.”
Smith did not accept her apology because she did believe it was sincere which is her right.
As terrible as her comments are, if Miller genuinely atones for her actions and makes an honest attempt to be better understanding of Black people, then over time, she should be forgiven.
Remember, people will tell on themselves, just give them time.
