Adele accused of appropriation

Racism Score: 0.5

Celebrating other heritages is an excellent way to enhance knowledge for different cultures. We (as a society) need to create guide. A cultural appreciation/appropriation guide that explains the levels of appreciation and appropriation.

The purpose of the guide is to demonstrate when appreciation turns into appropriation. The current challenge is the inconsistency of who feels certain looks can be appreciation versus appropriation within the offended race.

The appropriation scrutiny extended to Adele recently as she shared a photo on Instagram of her in bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini top. Immediately, the photo seems harmless. The reason for the attire is for the Notting Hill Carnival, which is a celebration of Caribbean culture that moved to completely virtual this year due to COVID-19.

The issue at hand is Black people are not always extended the same courtesy regarding hairstyles in workplace settings. Without question, discriminating against Black people for certain hairstyles exists which needs to be rectified. Does that mean that everyone who wears a Black style is a committing cultural appropriation? No, it does not, but where is the line? In this instance, Adele is showing her appreciation at what appears to be the festival from a different year. It is not like she dressed up for Halloween as a Jamaican. Get it Adele!

We hope Adele does not delete the picture!
