Carmelo Anthony thinks Warriors need to change name

Racism Rating: 1.0

Plenty of sports teams at all levels have faced criticism over the past few years regarding their use of Native American culture. Add Carmelo Anthony to the list of detractors who would like to see all Native American mascots eliminated.

In a July 2020 tweet, Anthony shares his displeasure with the usage. The Warriors, Braves, Indians, Chiefs, and Blackhawks, (The Washington Football team changed name) are on the receiving end of Anthony’s behest.

The Warriors have avoided the offensive name spotlight as most people have no idea from 1951 – 1962 the team had a racist logo. Then from 1962 – 1969, a modified version to a headdress. The Warriors have no resemblance to Native American culture today since they have ceased all Native American culture usage.

All things considered; we are of the opinion the Warriors name and design, how constructed today is unoffensive. Interesting for Anthony to bring the name to light as there does not appear to be a mass outcry from Native Americans demanding a name change from the Warriors. If the name was racist or offensive, we are confident Draymond Green would have voiced his opinion.

Nevertheless, right, wrong, or indifferent someone will always find the offensiveness in any situation.
