Jay Williams candidate for “worst Tweet of the year” award with awful Boston Celtics Black coaching hire gaffe

Racism Score: 2.0

If 2021 has taught us anything, people are in a rush to comment on racial hires. They typically go something like this.

“Proud of (insert POC name), the first (insert job role) of color…”

One day we will live in a world where mentioning the person’s race is unnecessary. Although, many people believe that time is now, which is an excellent debate if one wants to ruin a social outing, work event, or family holiday function.

Jay Williams is suffering from the need to be first plague that journalists, pundits, and analysts alike are suffering from.

Instead of verifying facts first and ensuring the information is right, they post information right away even if the information is inaccurate.

Williams posted a tweet praising the Boston Celtics for hiring Ime Udoka, their “first” head coach of color. The problem however…this is their sixth.

Let’s stop the modern ’people of color’ term for a moment and label the coaches correctly, since labeling is so important these days.

BLACK.

All the ‘people of color’ coaches have been Black. The racial turmoil with the Celtics seems to be frequent, but in this instance, they deserve some credit.

Bill Russell, Tom Sanders, K.C. Jones, M.L. Carr, and Doc Rivers all came before Udoka. Russell was the first Black head coach in NBA history.

Rivers won a championship with Boston in 2008 by beating a Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant lead Laker’s team.

This type of gaffe by Williams is boneheaded, embarrassing, and ignorant.

But wait, there’s more! Williams claimed he was hacked!

Hoping people would believe the year is 2008, Williams is using the “hacked” defense. Good grief.

That is like when Joy Reid claimed she was hacked after her bigoted homophobic statements were exposed.

As Mediaite reported, Reid took it to another level by claiming (through her lawyer) the FBI was investigating the alleged hack.

Reid eventually apologized and since then, there has been radio silence on what the FBI discovered during their “investigation.”

ESPN has not commented on Williams’ egregious error, maybe they should have the FBI investigate to find the culprit. Here is a tip, he may look like this…

Suspect
