Lady Antebellum is the epitome of “when keeping it woke” goes wrong. In June, Lady Ante…Lady A had a revelation that it was time to move on from the name “Antebellum” due to the name’s deep south racist roots.
So, after Lady Antebellum’s personal reflection, they decided on the name “Lady A.” This is where the story gets interesting. The name “Lady A” was already taken by a Black musician. Instead of picking another name, the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum decided to hi-jack Lady A.
Anita White is the original Lady A. White is a blues singer from Seattle who has been known as Lady A professionally for over 20 years. The band formerly known as Lady Antebellum could not come to an amicable agreement with White regarding the use of the name Lady…so they are suing White.
The original Lady A countersued the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum as she believes she holds the superior common law rights.
What a bizarre scenario. Let us simplify what occurred.
- A white band determines their band name is racist
- Then the white band decides to change their band name
- The white band selects new name already taken by a Black singer
- The Black singer refuses to give up rights to original name to the white band
- The white band sues the Black singer for the rights to Black singer’s name
