New York Daily News depicts Asian mayoral candidate Andrew Yang with closed slant-eyes while insinuating he is a tourist

Racism Score: 4.2

There are plenty reasons to dislike political candidates if they do not align with your political views. Expressing one’s admiration or disdain for a candidate is a common practice in the political environment. The method however can be tricky if the candidate is a person of color.

For years, news papers have used cartoons to express their opinions. On some occasions the drawings have been racist.

Left-leaning news outlet New York Daily News decided to participate in the unnecessary quest for cartoon amusement by opining on New York City mayoral candidate, Andrew Yang who is Asian.

Cartoon by Bill Bramhall:

Apparently, that is the fixed version, so it appears less racist. The intent was to express that Yang does not visit certain New York areas enough, with the insinuation being although he is a 25-year resident, he is essentially a tourist.

The optics are extremely poor because “The tourists are back!” description is close to exhibiting the racist trope that American born Asians are…foreigners and not from America.

With the increase in Asian hate, this type of cartoon is unacceptable. Imagine if this cartoon gets in the hands of an unstable Asian-hating Black person? The image may validate the desire to attack Asians from racist nut jobs.

You read that right. Black people are attacking Asians at an alarming rate and it deserves to be highlighted.

Yang’s wife, Evelyn ripped the racist cartoon with the appropriate frustration.

Hard to believe to believe this got passed the editorial review. On second thought, no it is not because journalistic integrity is dead.
