Relax everyone, only 6 of Dr. Seuss’ books have been cancelled, not a big deal
Racism Score: 4.0
Dr. Suess like many people born in 1904 was racist, that should not surprise you. If you did not know Dr. Seuss was racist until now, that is surprising.
Racism aside, Dr. Suess was a wordsmith whose books have resonated with children of all races. Slight hiccup though. Apparently, there were racist images in 6 of his books, therefore, those books have been axed.
Again, 6 of them to be exact. Here is the list of the 6 books, along with key images from the books that have been deemed insensitive and/or racist.
1. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
For the record, Dr. Seuss is not being cancelled but the 6 books have seen their last days.
To atone for Dr. Seuss’ racist shortcomings, the estate of Dr. Seuss decided to stop publishing the 6 books with questionable images.
The estate informed the Associated Press the decision to cancel the books was made last year after months of deliberation.
“Dr. Seuss Enterprises listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalog of titles.”
You can watch a few white people explain the racist nature in the video below.
Maybe the images could have been redesigned instead of unpublishing them. Meh, who cares.
One could argue the removal of the 6 books is utterly ridiculous. One could argue removing the 6 books needed to be done.
Be honest with yourself, are you going to miss the 6 books being removed? Is that going to ruin your day? If so, simmer down. Seriously, take a deep breath and relax.
Have you even heard of those 6 titles in the Seuss catalog before now? Ignorance on this side, we had not.
