Super Bowl Champs Kansas City Chiefs logo under scrutiny
Racist Score: 0.9
The defending Super Bowl champs have remained under the radar for the most part regarding their Native name. We are referring to the Kansas City Chiefs. Many say the name originated from a white man who appropriated appreciated Native American culture. In 1963, the Chiefs moved to Kansas City from Texas where they were formally known as the Dallas Texans.
Harold Roe Bartle was the key individual who helped relocate the Chiefs to Kansas City. Bartle a founding member of the Boy Scouts honor camping society, Tribe of Mic-O-Say where legend has it, he was known as “Chief” Lone Bear. Welp, there you have it, that is how the Chiefs name came to be, let us close shop.
The Chiefs have taken tangible steps to mitigate the racist nature that comes along with a Native name by implementing the following.
- Switching mascot from a man riding a horse in a feathered headdress to a Chuck E Cheese looking wolf mascot
- Discouraged fans from wearing headdresses…
- (Insert another initiative here – if you know, let us know)
Outside of the Arrowhead design the Kansas City Chiefs use, there does not seem to be shall we say, a plethora of racist Native American appropriation. Many will disagree and that is fine.
