UCLA professor suspended for following standard procedure

Racism Score: 0.8

UCLA should be embarrassed with themselves for suspending a professor for asking honest questions in response to a student’s request to give Black students special treatment.

We are assuming a non-Black (possibly white…) student asked on behalf of Black students. We also assume the non-Black student possibly asked due to…white guilt. It is bad to assume, but here we are.

CBS Los Angeles shared the professor’s response:

The professor in question is Gordon Klein. Klein was suspended in June and has since been reinstated. After Klein sent the email to the student, the student started a petition to terminate Professor Klein.

Interestingly enough, in the petition the student says “We ask for your support now in holding Professor Klein to the same ethical standards he claims to be essential to a holistic and inclusive educational experience, which is what he owes to his students as an educational leader.”

Holistic and inclusive. How does a professor accomplish that if only Black students get special treatment?

UCLA advised Klein was put on leave for the tone of the email. Yes, the tone. The Fire reports Dean Antonio Bernardo described Klein’s email as an “abuse of power.”

Professor Klein is not a racist because he followed the standard grading policies.
