UF Acceptance denied as social medial reveals all

Racism Score: 5.4

A prospective University of Florida (UF) student was open and honest about their racist feelings. Usually, being forthright is an admirable trait many people can appreciate. However, how honest is too honest? That is the question a Cape Coral teen is asking themselves after being denied entry to UF because of their forthcomingness in an Instagram post.

Tell the world how you really feel. Self-awareness is at a premium these days so kudos to this individual for being self-aware enough to expose the hate in their heart and letting it out. The prospective student’s self-efficacy on the other hand is severely lacking.

Alarm bells should have gone off in the individuals head signaling “DO NOT POST, DO NOT POST!” This would have been a perfect opportunity for the individuals to connect with a Black person to discuss their feelings. Sounds farfetched, but to overcome one’s racist beliefs, one needs to connect with the race they hate to learn about the differences, perceptions, and stereotypes.

Can you be mad at someone for letting you know they are racist? Of course, and of course not. Racist people exist. It is not right, but it is the reality.

Most people do not share their racist beliefs. As a society we need to learn how to educate people who are willing to learn and willing to forgo their racist beliefs.

Tough sell for those who wish to cancel racist people completely. However, Darryl Davis taught us listening to each another is the best approach to understand one another.
